12 Week Ultrasound

Our little potato looks like a real baby now!

Today was our 12-week ultrasound and nuchal translucency scan! It was absolutely amazing and we got the best possible news: that our baby appears healthy and our risk for chromosomal abnormalities is extremely low.

This was the first time we got to see our baby move, which was surreal. As soon as the tech put the wand on my belly to start scanning we saw tiny legs kicking, and they kept kicking practically the whole time! That pretty much confirms for me that I’m not really feeling the baby kicking yet because I didn’t feel a thing.

The tech really took her time and showed us the brain (it looks like a walnut!), face, stomach, bladder, hands, legs, and umbilical cord. The heartbeat was 157 beats per minute and, according to the tech, “very strong.” The baby is even measuring a little ahead in terms of length: crown-to-rump measured 12w4d even though we’re just 12w1d.

Even though the baby is just the size of a lime the tech gave us her best guess on its sex, but since it’s not a sure thing we’re not sharing it yet! I did get a bit emotional (in a good way) when I heard the news, though.

Because everything looks so good I don’t think we’ll be getting a CVS or amniocentesis. We’re still thinking about the Harmony test, though I don’t know that it’s really necessary. The doctor was careful to let us know that things are still early, so they won’t know for sure that everything is normal until the anatomy scan in 8 more weeks, but so far everything looks as it should.

We’ve given our families the go-ahead to tell aunts and uncles but we’re waiting to share anything on social media for the time being. It’s hard not to tell everyone when I feel so overjoyed! 🙂

  1. That’s great news!! So my scan at 12 weeks they thought it was a girl. So we got all pumped for a girl, then harmony confirmed it was a boy. lol still over the moon happy and that the baby is healthy but… Just beware that they might be wrong this early 😉
